As a Protestant, I did not grow up knowing much about Saint Francis, only that statues of him graced many gardens, and churches sometimes held Blessings of Animals near his Feast Day. Now, after visiting Assisi many times, and being a long-time student of Franciscan friar, Richard Rohr, I am deeply inspired by the lives of Saints Francis and Clare, find in them radical and liberating spiritual guides for these times.

This year marks the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis, and October 4 is his Feast Day.
