As children, many of us learned the prayers “Now I lay me down to sleep . . .” and “God is great, God is good . . .” As we grow older, we may sense there is more to prayer, and long to connect with God in deeper and more meaningful ways. Question is, how do we do this? Like Jesus' disciples, we may yearn to know how to pray.
In this workshop, we will talk about prayer in all its complexity, seeking to expand and deepen both our understanding and experience of prayer. We will learn about and "try on" different prayer practices, which could include breath prayer, praying the hours, lectio divina (sacred reading), praying the examen, walking the labyrinth, body prayer, journaling, praying with icons, welcoming prayer, centering prayer and others. As prayer is not a one-size-fit-all practice, we'll move toward shaping a prayer discipline that is uniquely suited for us, one that can be continued and evolved beyond our time together.
