"Spirituality in its best sense is about what we do with our pain."  and  "The way through is always much more difficult than the way around.  Cheap religion gives us the way around.  True religion gives us the way through.  Cheap religion denies the darkness.  True religion steps right into it."

Hope Against Darkness by Richard RohrLenten Book Group:

Hope Against Darkness

In our current cultural, political and economic climate, we may feel tempted toward despair or a sense of helplessness in terms of making any real and lasting change.  In times of darkness, how can we stay grounded in the hope and promise of the Christian gospel, as taught and lived by Jesus, and saints like Francis of Assisi?

In this group, we will read and discuss Richard Rohr’s book Hope Against Darkness: The Transforming Vision of Saint Francis in an Age of Anxiety. Together we will seek to neither deny nor over-identify with our fears and anxieties about the darkness of our lives and the world, but rather transcend and transform them. Come join with others seeking an alternative vision and path (a third way) this Lent.
